Thirty-one people have been arrested after Kentucky fans set fires when their college basketball team crashed out of the NCAA tournament. The disorder happened after the Wildcats’ 71-64 Final Four loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday.
Rowdy scenes broke out as 1,500 fans spilled into the street near the University of Kentucky’s campus in the city of Lexington.
The large crowd chanted anti-Wisconsin slogans and set fire to multiple objects, said police.
A number of people were hurt, and some were taken to hospital, though none of the injuries were serious, police said.
The situation was cleared by 2:15am local time, said police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts.
“This was a citywide effort to clear this situation,” she said. “It really requires the whole city to come together in situations like these.”
Kentucky’s team had been only two wins away from the national championship after a 38-game undefeated streak.
The Badgers will play the Duke Blue Devils on Monday night.
