The road trip, whether it’s an extended trip to explore some of the hidden corners of the UK and Ireland or to eat up the miles across Europe, is a dream for many petrol heads. There’s nothing like taking your own car on a tour to see the sights and provided you have the time and the inclination, have done your homework on where to go and the local driving regulations it’s not difficult to do. But that doesn’t mean all cars are equal when it comes to road trips though; some just make better mile munchers and load carriers than others. Here are three very different cars that are all great company on a trip.
Volvo V70
If your road trip requires the carrying of large loads such as camping or ski equipment, then a wagon or estate car is going to be very useful indeed. Volvo have always been known for making safe and robust estate cars and the current generation V70 is no different. It’s extremely practical, but also has the touch of luxury to ensure that those miles of open road don’t tire you out; leather and soft finishes can be found everywhere in the cabin. Most Volvos do well in reliability ratings too, so there’s no worry about breaking down when you’re hundreds of miles from your local workshop. And on a long run, a diesel V70 can be surprisingly economical.
Mercedes SL-Class
The SL is perhaps one of the world’s greatest grand tourers. A car that is equally comfortable darting around a track at high speed as it is cruising down to the coast. This is the perfect choice if you’re really looking to get driving enjoyment out of your trip. It does of course have only two seats and limited storage space however, so it’s not ideal if you have a lot of luggage to take with you. You can choose between the latest model, or the extremely cool older models such as the R129. If you’re going on your road trip in the summer months, then having a drop top is great fun.
BMW 5 Series
If you need space for both people and luggage, and you’ve got a lot of miles to conquer, then there are few better choices than the 5 Series, which is one of the world’s most popular executive cars. There are many different engines to choose from, whether you’re looking for the economy of a 2.0-litre diesel, or the red-blooded power of a petrol V8. All have the same ability to cross continents with ease, and make fantastic companions wherever your road trip takes you. They’re also great for the rest of the time, too.
